Other great features include a built-in variable control voice

"I have never owned a voice recorder so have
nothing to compare it to, but I like this gadget. I bought it
for college lectures and have one professor that I was
concerned the recorder would not pick up, but it picked her up
beautifully without any external mics. However, I do sit two
rows from her. The recordings sound better through earphones
and the computer than the speaker on the device, which is not a
problem for me. The software was easy to install and it was
very simple to download the recordings to my Windows based
computer. My only complaint is there is not software for a Mac
for the DS-30. I have seen where the latest Olympus recorders
include Mac software now."

"The DS-30 is perfect in every way. I am a focus group
moderator and use it to record my sessoins--it captures even
softer voices in the room great; the software it comes with is
surprisingly quite good in terms of being easy to use and
allowing you to slow down or speed up the playback without
affecting the pitch of the voices. Battery life is incredible;
I have used this hours and hours and have replaced the
batteries maybe once in the last 6 months. The model below this
is not nearly as good, and the model above this one is not
worth it unless you really need to record more than six hours
at a time."

"I struggled to decide between this recorder and the olympus
W300M (with the direct usb port instead of cable). I finally
chose the olympus DS30 after looking at the olympus site and
noting that it has three microphone sensitivities, including
one for lecture. Most of my teachers in large lecture halls
wear a microphone and I was able to sit in the very back of a
large room and it sounds as though the recorder was on the
podium next to him. It is almost too sensitive, I also recorded
the unzipping of my bookbag and turning pages in my book. I
love the wma files because I just drag and drop them into my MS
OneNote after class. The only downside is that you have to
carry a usb cable, but I got lucky that it uses the same small
usb as my wacom graphic tablet. The recording time is short if
you record in the highest quality, but it takes seconds to
transfer to my pc, which I do at the end of the day or after
class. I am amazed at the quality and I am sure this device
will come in handy for several occasions."
